WoW 8.1: Horde War Campaign, Part 3: Breaking Out Ashvane

by - 6 years ago

The Horde and Alliance War Campaigns begin anew with patch 8.1. In this post, we look at part 3 of the Horde War Campaign, we join Arcanist Valtrois and the half-ogre, half-orc Rexxar to break out Lady Priscilla Ashvane for Sylvanas. This is the last part of the Horde War Campaign available until January 29, when the last phase becomes accessible.

An Uneasy Truce

Although we don’t know why yet, Warchief Sylvanas seeks some kind of agreement with Lady Ashvane. Ashvane, as Alliance players will remember, was the main antagonist of the Kul Tiras story. Ashvane worked behind Katherine Proudmore’s back to usurp her and take Kul Tiras for herself, secretly arming a third-party faction with Azerite weapons to do the trick. Although defeated and imprisoned in Tol Dagor, Sylvanas should be careful of dealing with a known rebel and backstabber, although the Warchief’s pragmatic nature of late seems right in line with this development.

At any rate, this affair is made more ironic by the fact that Rexxar was responsible for Daelin Proudmore’s death, a point that stirred contention in a preceding phase of the Horde War Campaign and was no small part of story frustrations throughout the Alliance’s original adventure in Kul Tiras.

For her part, Valtrois reminds Rexxar and players of the necessity of skepticism, and of not following leadership blindly. As a recently freed Nightborne and key member of the insurrection against the Grand Magistrix Elisande in Legion, her and her people know this intimately, and would likely have much to say on Sylvanas’s path of late.

Regardless of all of this, Nathanos Blightcaller sends players off to the old Ashvane Foundry, where Valtrois and Rexxar have gathered to mount an infiltration into Tol Dagor. To do that, they’ll need disguises, and Valtrois has an idea.

Undercover Admirality

We start off with a set of three quests that are pretty run-of-the-mill. Face Your Enemy has you using a quest item that channels on use, sending 3 Kul Tiran humans back to Valtrois for modeling her spell. Be More Uniform is the collection part, where you must pick up uniform parts from mobs–the mobs are plentiful and weak, so this doesn’t take long. This quest also has you kill a captain, which you’d think would be more of an elite, but is basically the same quality as surrounding trash. Lastly, don’t be dumb like me and forget to pick up Rexxar’s quest, A Brilliant Distraction, where you’ll go around to Azerite bomb piles to pick out their Volatile Azerite–something that will come up again later.

After you complete these three short quests, you’ll need to rendezvous with Nathanos at Plunder Harbor to mount the Tol Dagor infiltration and free Lady Ashvane.

Tol Dagor

This last part takes place in a scenario inside the existing Tol Dagor dungeon. You’ll work your way down from the cell portion of the building, through the sewers, and back out with the prize.

On arrival, Valtrois uses her disguise spell and the uniform pieces you collected to disguise herself and the player, while Rexxar’s identity is used openly as a captive for a cover story. Warden Amical let’s you in, where you must distract a couple guards and steal the dungeon key.

You’ll then free Lady Ashvane, who also notes the oddness of Sylvanas’s proposition, and move to release Ashvane’s men from the other cells. You may have to kill a couple guards to start, but as you release prisoners, they’ll distract most of the guards so you can move about freely.

Down in the bottom level, you escape into the sewers to set the Volatile Azerite bombs you collected earlier. After Valtrois ignites the bombs and collapses the tunnel behind you, Captain Amical and his goons give you one last fight before escape.

On your way to the docks, you’ll get a nice view of the new Forsaken ship model, and cue the short cutscene of Sylvanas and Ashvane.
