A New Warcraft RTS? Rumours Swirl After Gamescom

Tim Morten, producer on Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void, has admitted that Blizzard could consider a new Warcraft RTS game, once the final chapter of Starcraft II is over and done with.
Speaking to IGN at Gamescom, Morten said, “This isn’t the end of StarCraft, but it’s the end of this story for these characters… We don’t have any specific plans, but I’ll say that the universe has so much potential for more stories, clearly other stories could be told.
“It’s very rewarding for us to hear that there’s demand out there for more RTS content in the Warcraft universe so once we’re done with Void I think we’ll get together as a team and talk about what would inspire us to work on next. There’s no question, though, that we’ll consider Warcraft, StarCraft, or even new ideas. Anything is possible.”
Morten’s comments show a change for Blizzard, which in the past has maintained that WoW would be the future of the Warcraft IP. It is, as IGN notes, far from an airtight confirmation, though.
When could Warcraft IV be set? Before WoW? After? During? Could it serve as a lead-in to a new expansion? Warcraft III did a fantastic job in introducing new characters to the franchise, which we still care about today – see Arthas, Jaina and Thrall. The problem with WoW – indeed, any MMO – is that it is difficult to introduce and develop characters in-game. Novels are great for this, but that opens up the can of worms that is out-of-game lore development. A fourth addition to the pool of Warcraft RTS games neatly solves both issues.
