WoW 8.1: Assault on Vol’dun (Horde)

by - 6 years ago

We’re returning today to another open world zone Assault in Battle for Azeroth. Zone-wide Assaults return in Tides of Vengeance similar to Legion invasions. Kul Tiras and Zandalar feature timed events where you must push back against NPCs of the opposing faction for gear, rep, Service Medals, and experience rewards. In this post, we look at the Alliance Assault on Vol’dun, where the player defends as the Horde.

  • Miss other Alliance or Horde Assault reviews? We’ve got you covered!
  • Some of this is recap of the overall Assault system. Simply skip to the Vol’dun Assault section if you already know the basics!

BFA Assault Overview & Rewards

  • The game focuses on one of the six BFA zones at a time.
  • Horde or Alliance can do the Assault regardless of whose continent it occurs on.
    • Horde defend in Horde zones and attack in Alliance zones.
    • Alliance defend in Alliance zones and attack in Horde zones.
    • These Assaults are not wpvp in nature unless you have War Mode on.
  • New Horde or Alliance mobs, rares, and World Quests spawn with new quest mechanics.
  • Complete 4 Assault World Quests to move to the next stage of your faction’s defense.
  • Complete the 4 World Quests and defeat or defend in the name of your faction for rewards:
    • Up to 370 ilvl gear cache.
    • XP: Great for gearing and leveling alts 110-120!
    • Reputation with 7th Legion or the Honorbound, as well as the participating zone’s major reputation (Voldunai for Horde in Vol’dun).
    • 7th Legion or Honorbound Service Medals, a new currency in 8.1.
    • Azerite Power.
    • War Mode will grant you Conquest Points for completing Assaults.

Vol’dun Assault

High Warlord Cromush makes a return in Vol’dun, commanding Horde troops to counter and contain an Alliance offensive. The Vol’dun Assault World Quests occur mostly on the western half of the zone, clustered like all other BFA Assaults. There is variation in World Quest spawns and availability in each Assault, so you won’t always run the same quests.

Some Possible World Quests

  • Desert Crawl: Usha Eyegouge tells you to collect crawler mine parts scattered around the battlefield. You should be able to do this without much fuss from Alliance NPCs, but after collecting 8 pieces, you’ll proceed to phase 2. In phase 2, you’ll activate the nearby mine controls by a frustrated Goblin, steering a crawler toward an Alliance war machine. You’ll gain three abilities: Power Walk temporarily increases your run speed, Stealth hides you from nearby Alliance NPCs, and the Detonate you must save for the target at the far end of the ridge. You must use a combination of Power Walk and Stealth to avoid the NPCs, as in crawler form you have no defense and low health.
  • The Hills Have Spies: Like Bird’s Eye View and Where Eagles Prey for the Alliance, you’ll need to use a nearby Goblin-tech jetpack to take out Alliance spies from the surrounding ridges of Dead Man’s Pass. The jetpack gives you an extra action button to shoot up in the air, where you can either glide down to safety or use yet another action button to rocket to a location of your choosing. You’ll need to kill SI:7 scouts and collect spy gear to finish this quest.
  • Fury of the Earth: Lady Liadrin has you take down the rarespawn Rockfury blocking Horde advancement on a highroad in Bonetrail Gulch. With a group of players he should go down quickly, and he seems to have only a couple moves besides a standard attack. He will occasionally enchant himself with Harden, which reduces all damage taken by half. This cast can be interrupted, Purged, or Spellstealed. He also uses Earth Spike, which is interruptable and causes rock shards to erupt under nearby aggro’d players.
  • Battle Pets: Just down the road from Fury of the Earth, a Goblin and Gnome pit their respective giant robots against each other. To make them…work, I guess…you need to collect 10 Alkalescent Salt from nearby Saltspine Krolusk in Bonetrail Gulch. Nothing special here, really. Once you have them all, you’ll use them on the giant robo-ape on the bridge, who will continue to do battle with the opposing robo-spider.
  • Grand Marshal Fury: Lady Liadrin orders you to neutralize this Alliance field leader at the entrance to Shatterstone Harbor. This rarespawn will probably require a small group to take down, but a quick stop in the Group Finder and you should be fine. He has standard melee attacks and an ability called Hammer of Wrath, which is interruptable. I tried getting it to show in a couple different spawns, but it always seems to get interrupted by someone–I would imagine it’s similar to the Paladin ability.

Assault the Alliance Ship

After completing 4 Assault World Quests, you’ll proceed to the final phase. Return to Lasan Skyhorn on the western coast at Forward Camp, where you’ll mount his Highmountain eagle, Aviash, and set off for the Alliance airship.

Once on the ship, you’ll have to fill up a progress meter (which seems rather slow compared to many other progress meters for Assault World Quests) and kill Captain Granger. You gain progress by killing Alliance NPCs and blowing up Gnomish gyrocopters (there’s a bunch up the rear stairs). You can also pick up bombs from highlighted bomb piles to throw at NPCs. The captain is a Worgen that can be found in the helm at the rear. He’s likely surrounded by other Horde players and will go down in seconds–if not, he’s easily soloable.

Once you’re done, hop back on Aviash, watch the ship go boom, and head back to Vulpera Hideaway for loot, 5 Honorbound Service Medals, rep, and whatever else you qualify for from the above rewards list.
