A Bid Farewell to the Dark (Green) Portal
by Aaron "BLU3" - 10 years ago show comments
With patch 6.0.2 we bid farewell to the Dark Portal we all knew and loved. Luckily it isn’t gone per se; it’s more like it has been reborn with a more sinister glow to it, and we have received a new shiny red Dark Portal.
The Burning Crusade expansion went live January 9th 2007. With it a Dark Portal fueled by fel energies was released onto the world of Azeroth. You may have heard the saying “the world is not enough.” Blizzard took this to heart, and gave us a trip out of this world. We, the adventurers, were rewarded with a grand expedition into Outlands.
On October 14th 2014 at 1am pst, the dousing of the old green Dark Portal took place. As a tribute to this landmark occasion, many players took off to the Blasted Lands to spend some final quality time with the Portal that changed the World of Warcraft. Everywhere you looked people were celebrating. Many flew circles around the crater, showing off rare and fantastical mounts; others laid out feasts for all to enjoy. Of course, what party would be complete with out some knockdown drag-out fights? World PVP was definitely taking place.

It was an awe-inspiring sight to see so many Sky Golems show up to pay respect to the last moment of this incarnation of the Dark Portal.

Mythical mounts in all shapes and sizes showed up to ferry the adventurers in the merriment, as we all enjoyed the last tranquil moments surrounded by the comforting green glow.

No-one needed to worry about their food buff falling off while enjoying the festivities of this completely player-created event.
How did your server pay their respects? We hope you were able to enjoy it while it lasted.
The Iron Horde Incursion is underway. We can only hope that this new Dark Portal can live up to the legacy that its predecessor left behind.
