The Weekly Grind: Hydraxian Waterlords

In this weekly column, we’ll highlight specific dailies, quests, or reputation grinds that can be found all over Azeroth. It’s a big world, and there is a lot of questing to be done!
For Vanilla WoW players, Molten Core was the first big raid experience. Nowadays, it is content that is usually skipped over on the way to max level, or only revisited for transmogrification items, pets. nostalgia, or a sense of completionism. Most newer players will likely only run it a handful of times, just to say they’ve done it. There is hardly a reason to run it over and over and OVER again, like it was done in the days of yore of 2002.
Or is there?
Players keeping a keen eye on their reputation achievements have likely noticed an entry for the Hydraxian Waterlords
. What does this have to do with Molten Core? Simply put: everything. The Hydraxian Waterlords are an elemental faction who see themselves as the mortal enemies of Firelord Ragnaros and his fire elementals. Gaining reputation with the Waterlords eventually granted players the Aqual Quintessence as a reward, which was needed to summon Majordomo Executus, the final boss of Molten Core before players could summon Ragnaros himself.
Today, both the quest as well as the prerequisite for summoning Ragnaros have been removed, but players can still grind out reputation with the Hydraxian Waterlords. The only thing required is to kill foes in Molten Core. Many, many foes. Even though most players running Molten Core today vastly outlevel the content, reputation for kills is still granted. The catch: All trash reputation stops at 11999/12000, and only boss kills count from that point onward. When reaching 20999/21000 reputation with the Hydraxian Waterlords, only Ragnaros and Golemagg
will grant reputation. Ragnaros kills from the Firelands raid do not impact Hydraxian Waterlords rep.
What do player earn today for reaching Exhalted with the Hydraxian Waterlords? Aside from another checkbox in the overall list of reputation grinds completed, there is really nothing – other than a deep sense of accomplishment that Azeroth is safe again from Ragnaros’ reign of terror.
