New Mage Hero: Medivh

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s announcement of Alleria Windrunner as the new Hunter hero, today started off with the reveal of Medivh as the new Mage.
Folks may remember that Medivh was the rogue archmage who, while possessed by the dark Titan Sargeras, opened the first Dark Portal and allowed the orcish Horde to invade Azeroth way back in Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. Medivh, after being killed by his apprentice Khadgar and his old friend Anduin Lothar, would return as a shade, free of Sargeras’ influence and regretful of what his magic had wrought. As atonement, he guided a new generation of heroes including Jaina Proudmoore and Thrall to Kalimdor, to aid Malfurion in protecting the World Tree from the renewed assault of the Burning Legion in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.
Medivh is a solid choice to suit the mage kit, given how many similarities he has with legendary wizards like Merlin or Tolkien’s Gandalf. It is notable that he’s not really a cross-faction option, as Alleria and Magni both are… but even then, Medivh’s position in the franchise tends to put him beyond the Alliance vs. Horde dynamic in a number of ways.
What do you think of this new addition to the roster? Have someone else you would have preferred?
I love Medivh, but I definitely would have gone with Kael’thas. Gives a Horde alternate, more racial options. Plus, Medivh feels a but too “all powerful” to be chillin’ in an Inn playing cards. Oh well, just minor nitpicks, I still think he’s neat. 🙂
There are neutral heroes in Hearthstone though. Plus, Kael’thas was Alliance before he joined up with Illidan and then with the Burning Legion.
Yep, neutral heroes are fine. I’d call Gul’dan neutral. He worked with the Horde, but was never loyal to it. Mostly Medivh feels a little “big” to me. But honestly only a little.
His character is such that he’d be curious about the game and would enjoy the diversion.
His addition thankfully ends the theory that all the new heroes will be alternate faction. Which wasn’t exactly possible anyway given Gul’dan and Valeera. (She’s a Blood Elf but more loyal to Varian than anything. Not the Horde, not the Alliance.)
