Not in the Patch Notes: Play Mode Ranking Resets Every Tuesday
by JR Cook - 11 years ago show comments
EDIT: Since reporting on this Aratil has posted in the forums that it was reset this week in order to test the functionality. It doesn’t appear that this means there will be a weekly reset.
The ranked ladder was reset yesterday. This was done in order to help us to test the ladder reset functionality as we continue to work on and develop how ladder systems will be implemented for Hearthstone. We appreciate your continued testing efforts through the Hearthstone closed beta to make this game the best it can possibly be for everyone on release!
Something I found interesting while playing tonight was after a match I was playing finished up (shortly after midnight PST Tuesday) I got a notification that my ranking is now Journeyman. I was at 3 stars Masters at the time and now I’m reset back to Journeyman, the initial starting position.
The way the ranked system used to work before the beta patch was kind of mysterious anyway. You wouldn’t lose ranking if you lost a bunch of games so you could kind of grind your way through and eventually get to 3 Star Masters with enough will power and time, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
Nothing like this was mentioned in the patch notes and it’s probably a system they are playing with and testing in the beta. As of right now I didn’t get any rewards for my advancement and then reset but it makes me wonder if they will implement a weekly reward system to those who choose to play constructed over Arena. In fact, it’s almost a necessity as right now the best way to get rewarded in the game isn’t to grind 3 wins for 10 gold but to play through the Arena where the rewards are much more measurable (especially if you’re a solid player and can win 7+ regularly). It’s also currently missing a way to tell the player what their best ranking ever was, like the way Arena displays it.
I’m not sure yet how I feel about the ranking resetting. On one hand I like the idea of knowing where I am at among the other players and where I rank as a whole. On the other hand if they implement a rewards system to this constructed will get a lot more play time from some of the more hardcore players.
What do you all think of this change and what would you like to see in ranked play?
First of all i think they should implement way more stats, win-loss ratio per deck and total. they should add an overall ladder and a weekly ladder, or tournament mode like in warcraft 3 where there was a tournament almost every day at a set hour. the thing is the game is good as it is but there’s a lack of play modes, options and stats. However I’m sure blizzard will implement a bunch of cool things in the future.
A win/loss isnt important, as if you are positive with a win/loss, that just means that the current ELO system in place isnt working. This is what Blizzard said about SC2, and it really does make sense. Everyone should be about at 50% win/loss minus the best of the best players because its hard for them not to break the system. The reason you are stomping if you are, is one of 3 things. You either are the top .01% or so of the playerbase, something isnt working in the elo system, or something in the game is broken(ie. OP cards etc.) that is allowing you to have a good W/L ratio.
Even some of the best LoL players have only a slightly positive or negative Win/loss due to the fact that they are facing people of around their skill.

I agree with Hippolyth that more stats should be shown. I like the idea of a reset but I think there has to be a reward system in place too. I wonder thought if every Tuesday is too often or maybe it should be every month instead? I’d like to see a separate ladder for each hero as well.

I’m fine with weekly resets, if there is a reward comparable to what you get from the Arena. I.e., finish the week at 2 star Diamond, get a pack, a card + 200g, finish the week at 1 star silver, get a pack + 25g. Or something like that. Anything else and it is utterly pointless.

Ranked resets are great! They’re clearly going to give us rewards for ranking, making constructed not feel like a complete waste of time.
