Mega Hits: Dealing the Crushiest of Crushing Blows

by - 11 years ago

Last week, I wrote about the “many minions – handle it!” style of play, when you’re wearing your opponent down by a thousand little paper cuts. This week, we’ll be talking about the exact opposite of that: the soul-crushing, board-shattering, game ending mega-blow.

Meet the “Wombo Combo”, as termed by streamer Crota. His minion, already buffed to 9, receives a doubling in health from Divine Spirit – not once, but twice. The minion’s health points now stand at a whopping 36. No worries with just one attack point, right?

Wrong.

He then plays Inner Fire, which converts health points to attack points. Boom! goes the dynamite, down goes Garrosh with a single blow of 36 attack points. Note that both of these cards are basic deck cards for the Priest.

If you think this is unique to the priest, there are other ways and cards that can deal board-shattering amounts of damage all at once. Our next example is the shaman.

Let’s start with the Argent Commander, combined with a healthy serving from the Shaman toolkit. The Argent Commander comes with Divine Shield, meaning the first blow he receives or deals against minions will simply remove the shield without damage done against him. This makes him a perfect candidate for a Windfury attack. He starts out with 6 attacks points. Let’s combine this with Flametongue totem (2 Mana), boosting his attack power to 8. Add Bloodlust (5 Mana) for an additional +3 this turn, Rockbiter Weapon (1 Mana) for another +3, and finish it off with Windfury (2 Mana) to double it. This amounts to 14 attack points dealt twice in one round, which can even be split up to hit two different targets for good measure. If you are facing an overly buff Gruul for example, you can take him out with one 14 point strike, and still deal a mighty second blow against your opponent. Not quite the same game finisher as the Wombo Combo, but a game changer for sure!

Granted, playing an attack like this requires a certain amount of luck, planning, and a patience. If you are banking on being able to play it, chances are your opponent might finish you off before all these cards play perfectly for you. But when they do, it’s a brilliant way to come out on top!

The lesson here: don’t play all your taunts and polymorphs against lower-level minions. Save them for the “big guns”. And if not, sit back, relax, and enjoy the fireworks.

Have you encountered any mega-attacks or were you able to play a mega-attack yourself? If you are not playing the beta yet, have you done any theory crafting to come up with the perfect attack? Let us know what you did in the comment section below, or send an email to hearthpro@blizzpro.com. We’d love to hear from you!

  1. I’ve seen this a few times, which means you have to keep a Priest clear of minions. If one gets away from you, CCs are the only way to counter them. Polymorph, Hex, Assassinate are the few plays that can counter them. Otherwise, it’s game over…especially in the late game when you protect with taunts and the Priest is able to weave Mass Dispel into the combo.
