Hearthside Chat about Dr. Boom’s Puzzle Lab

by - 7 years ago

This morning, Hearthstone released another Hearthside Chat, explaining the game design process. In this video, Mission Designer Giovanni Scarpati and Lead UI Designer Max Ma take us through the Puzzle Labs (going live on August 21st), describing both how they work and why the team decided to make them that way. We see that there are four types of puzzles, Lethal, Survival, Board Clear, and Mirror. The names are fairly self-explanatory: Lethal means you kill your opponent; Survival means you survive for one turn; Board Clear means you clear the whole board (both sides); and Mirror means you need to replicate the opponent’s board state exactly. They originally played with certain puzzles that lasted multiple turns, but ended up making all the puzzles only one turn.

The puzzles are organized similarly to how the old Adventure wings looked, but allowing you to take them in any order you want. They are grouped into sets of around 8 or 9 puzzles per loading screen, and it appears that the puzzles flow directly from one into the next once completed. The Puzzle Lab’s big boss is a final, multi-part puzzle encounter with Dr. Boom himself.
