Theorycrafting Knights of the Frozen Throne

by - 8 years ago

It’s the night before Knights of the Frozen throne and I spent all of today–like, entirely too much of today–theorycrafting some decks that I hope to play with tomorrow. And, after all that effort, I’d really like to share a few with you.

Not all of these are intended to be the most powerful decks, but those which are most interesting to me. The most powerful decks early in release cycles are usually last season’s aggressive decks, with a few updates, designed to prey on experimenters like me. Jade Druid also seems like a really powerful option against what will likely be a lot of slow decks trying out new Hero cards, but my updated Jade Druid list is just a few cards off of the current one, and that doesn’t make for exciting theorycrafting.

So, without further ado:

Evolve Shaman

Okay, so the first of the bunch might actually be one of the boring, best decks on day 1. Still, I think some players are sleeping on it, so I thought it was worth mentioning. As we all know, Evolve/Token Shaman is already one of the top decks in the meta. With the Frozen Throne, Shaman got a powerful Deathknight hero that slots right into the deck. Rattling Rascal seems like it might be a good fit, especially because the 4-mana casting cost allows you to Evolve AND Thrall on the same turn.

Tempo Warrior

Tempo Warrior has long been one of my favorite decks in the game. I have some serious doubts as to whether Tempo Warrior can overtake Taunt Warrior in the meta because Taunt Warrior has inevitability that Tempo Warrior doesn’t, but Tempo Warrior has explosiveness and something close to infinite Whirlwind effects to play with, so it seems like something worth experimenting with.

Some Sort of Crazy Hunter Thing

After the initial build-a-beast excitement, it seems that a lot of players have cooled on Deathstalker Rexxar. I’m not one of those players. I love the way that the card allows for a different type of Hunter inevitability and how it allows Hunter to play fewer minions than it traditionally does. Fewer minions essentially converts Stitched Tracker into a “tutor” effect to get you multiple Yoggs, an emergency Doomsayer board clear, or the second half of your Cloaked Huntress + Professor Putricide combo. Odds are that this is not the most powerful of the decks I’ve theorycrafted, but it is definitely the one I’m most excited about.

Bonus Deck: [Wild] EZ BIG EZ GG EZ Priest

I float in and out of Wild occasionally, though it is definitely my second most commonly played game type, so I don’t know exactly what the meta will look like after the set drops, but I expect Warlock, Pirate Warrior, and Reno/N’Zoth Priest remain the decks to plan on seeing. This is a lightly different take on Priest based on the (perhaps dubious) assumption that we have no reached the critical mass of “reanimation” effects that we can reliably pull out something big and bring it back repeatedly for really cheap. Without Druid’s ramp cards, the deck relies pretty heavily on Barnes to cheat out the big dudes, so mulligan aggressively for it. Otherwise, just try to hold on with all your healing effects and, hopefully, your big guys will be able to bring you back into the game late.

That’s all I have for now, but if prior releases have taught me anything it is that this will all be out the window as soon as I crack open my packs. So, what are you planning on playing tomorrow?
