ZenStyle and the Top Deck Miracles

by - 11 years ago

There’s a certain stigma in card games to profiting as a result of top decking a card. Despite the obvious amount of luck that comes with something like a great starting hand, or getting the right spells and minions in the right sequence, veterans and new players alike shout from on high the dishonor of being ‘lucky’, as opposed to skilled. Regardless of the negativity that’s sometimes associated with it, there’s really nothing more satisfying than seeing the perfect answer pop up in your hand, saving you from certain death.

I had a hilarious and amazing experience tonight in the arena, where in, beset by overpowered Blood Imps and a hoard of marauding enemies, my poor Mage deck was forced to dig through card after card in desperate search of Blizzard and Flamestrike. In the process of digging, I would slaughter my own Loot Hoarder, and singe my own Acolyte of Pain, the sad price of progress. The video below shows the fight from my end. BlizzPro site owner Eldorian joined me, and the two of us tried to make sense of what was happening. Sadly, I ended up losing, but it was easily the most entertaining game of Hearthstone I’ve played yet.

Hehe! It was really fun to watch zen!! Seeing you damage your acolyte for more draws then finally getting that flamestrike on your next turn decimating all enemy minions was priceless! 🙂 Shame you didnt get to continue your arena run!

awesome top-decking skills; I wouldn’t want to play against you when I get into beta! 😀

Aha top-decking was probably one of the most humorous things that happened when I use to play MTG actively. Use to frustrate the crap out of my opponents especially in sealed/limited drafts.

Topdecking is so exciting in hearthstone because you’re always picking up a minion or spell rather than peripheral things like extra resources. It’s not always what you need but at least it’s something… usually.

I had a run yesterday and don’t remember exactly what I was picking up (I think it was back to back Lord of the Arenas and Stormwind Champions). At any rate I managed to claw back board control from a hunter while I was at 2 health and he was at 30. I kept armoring up and he kept shooting the armor, but I got him a few rounds later! It was reminiscent of hull-tanking in Eve, your life hanging by a thread.

I haven’t really been interested in playing Warlock, but I could see myself running a blood imp deck.

That was so close to being an epic comeback. As Nick said, topdecking in Hearthstone is a bit more exciting cause you know you won’t be drawing, say a land, like in MTG. I remember games of magic where I desperately needed a card, ANY card to help keep me alive and I’d just draw land after land.

I do like the Warlock’s ability to take 2 damage and draw a cad. Quite powerful if you’re not close to dying OR are just trying to use your resources before playing jaraxxus.

Ah how often have I seen a rogue fucking a streamer with a top-deck assassinate 🙂
