Hearthstone Patch 36.2.2 Nerfs Mug Shaman, Buffs 10 Underperforming Cards
by JR Cook - 2 months ago show comments
Hearthstone Patch 36.2.2 dropped today with sweeping balance changes designed to shake up both Standard and Battlegrounds. The Hearthstone team is taking direct aim at Mug Shaman’s early snowball potential and the repetitive value loops that have defined the format, while simultaneously buffing 10 underperforming cards to open breathing room for new strategies.
The headline nerf is Mug’zee, whose Hero Power now unlocks on Turn 3 instead of Turn 2. That delay should give opponents an extra turn to establish board presence before Mug Shaman starts generating value out of control. Warden Maiev drops from 1/4 to 1/3, making her easier to answer on Turn 2, while Gallagio Goon moves from 1 mana to 2 mana (gaining a stat point in the process). Jade Guardians gets slammed from 3 mana to 5 mana, which is a massive delay for a card the devs describe as creating “insurmountable board states earlier than we would like.”
Confront the Tol’vir Gets a Full Rework
The most dramatic change is Confront the Tol’vir, which has been completely redesigned. Instead of replaying all 1-cost cards you’ve played (including spells), it now summons only 1-cost minions at 4 mana instead of 5. The dev team cited “repetitive” gameplay and excessive value generation, especially the card draw and sustain that let Hunter apply pressure far longer than an aggressive deck normally should. Arcane Tripwire also takes a hit, dropping from 5 damage split to 4.
All six nerfed cards are eligible for full dust refunds for two weeks, so disenchant them now if you’re sitting on copies.
10 Buffs Target Struggling Archetypes
On the buff side, the team went beyond simple stat bumps. Aya, Lotus Kingpin now gives you 3 upgraded counterfeits instead of 2. Blazing Invocation returns to its original power level (Discover a Battlecry minion that costs 1 less), compensating for the Mug Shaman nerfs hitting the same archetype. Soul Immolation drops from 3 mana to 2 mana, while Irida Sinseeker now leaves 1 card in your deck instead of sending everything to the Void.
Crowd Control got a complete overhaul, jumping from 3 mana to 5 mana but now dealing 2 damage twice to all minions (4 damage total if you have 25+ cards in your deck, which reduces the cost to 3). Vulcanos now deals 3 damage instead of 2 at end of turn, and its Plume token becomes a 1/5. Tricksy Improviser moves to 5 mana as a 4/3 but casts two random Mage Secrets instead of one. Infest the Scullery shifts to 5 mana and summons two random 3-cost minions instead of one 4-cost minion. Hellraiser gains Taunt, and Staff of Trickery becomes a 1/4 weapon.
The dev team acknowledged uncertainty about where things will land after changes this aggressive, but they’re planning to monitor closely. The next major update will be Class Sets, followed by another scheduled balance pass, so there’s room to course-correct if needed. A Dev Update video drops tomorrow (August 19 at 10 a.m. PDT) with more details on Hearthstone, Battlegrounds, and the upcoming Class Sets.
Battlegrounds Gets Lobster Nerf
Battlegrounds also sees significant changes. Tasty Lobster, which the team says has been “crowding out other strategies” with its consistency, gets its Deathrattle halved. Hoarding Hyena remains banned for now while the team watches how the meta settles.
