Hearthstone Battlegrounds is getting its biggest shakeup in months. Season 14: Dark Gifts of Dalaran drops August 4 at 10 a.m. PDT, and it’s bringing a completely new resource system, a fresh keyword, over 60 new minions, and a handful of Heroes that slot right into the new mechanics. This isn’t just a minion refresh, it’s a fundamental shift in how you spend your gold each turn.

Dark Gifts Add a New Layer to Every Turn

Starting on Turn 3, you’ll see a new Dark Gift button in the tavern. Spend 3 gold and you’ll Discover a minion paired with a unique Dark Gift enhancement. These aren’t subtle buffs either, we’re talking massive stat boosts, powerful keywords, and effects that can completely reshape your warband’s trajectory.

You can use the Dark Gift button once per turn, up to three times per game. The catch? The offerings scale with the turn you’re on. Grab something early for an immediate edge, or bank your uses and hold out for the truly absurd options that show up later. With over 40 Dark Gifts in the pool, every game is going to feel different.

Two new Heroes lean directly into this system. Nightmare Lord Xavius makes Dark Gifts even more appealing, while Tras’tath lets you secure a Tier 5 minion with a Dark Gift well ahead of when you’d normally have access. Both Heroes feel designed to reward players who can navigate the risk-reward timing of when to pull the trigger on a Dark Gift.

Activate Gives You New Ways to Spend Gold

Alongside Dark Gifts, Season 14 introduces Activate, a new keyword that lets certain minions trigger special abilities during the Recruit Phase by spending gold. Once a minion with Activate is in your warband, you can click it and pay the cost to fire off its effect. Each Activate ability works once per turn, so there’s real strategy in deciding whether to roll, level, buy, or dump gold into your existing board.

It’s another layer of decision-making that adds complexity without feeling overwhelming. Do you invest gold into your board now, or save it to pivot later? Activate minions are going to create some genuinely tough calls, especially in the mid-game when gold efficiency matters most.

60+ New Minions and Type-Specific Synergies

The minion pool is getting a major overhaul. Season 14 adds over 60 new minions, and several of them introduce entirely new type-specific mechanics. Pirates now have Lockbox, a keyword that locks a Golden minion behind a turn timer unless you find a way to break it out early. Beasts get Fishbait, which lets them attack during the Recruit Phase (yes, you read that right). The minion that takes the bait gets a hefty reward for the meal, creating a whole new avenue for Beast scaling.

To accommodate Fishbait, Venomous has been updated. It now destroys the first minion it damages each combat, rather than just the first minion it damages period. This keeps the keyword relevant once the actual battle starts, since Fishbait interactions happen before combat even begins.

Chromadrakes have been pulled from the tavern pool but can still be generated by specific minions and Trinkets. Their keyword text has been updated to reflect that they’re no longer naturally occurring Tier 3 Dragons.

Trinkets and Tavern Spells Round Out the Update

Trinkets are sticking around for another season. You’ll Discover from 23 new Lesser Trinkets and 24 new Greater Trinkets, all running alongside the Dark Gift system. Five new Tavern Spells are also joining the pool, giving you even more options to manipulate your board state or disrupt opponents.

The Season 14 Rewards Track launches alongside all of this, featuring cosmetics for Maiev, Vanessa VanCleef, and more. The Season Pass unlocks an extra two Hero options at the start of each game, and the Season Pass + includes one Hero re-roll per game on top of that. Ratings reset on August 4, so if you’ve been grinding Season 13, make sure you’ve claimed everything before the cutover.
