Netflix Diablo Series Moving Forward?

by - 6 years ago

Over the last week we’ve had some pretty strong evidence that Blizzard is moving forward with it’s rumored Diablo series being made for Netflix.

To catch everyone up to speed, rumors began to float around after the independent nerd-news site Revenge of the Fans reported that Netflix and Blizzard had begun talks about bringing a Diablo series to the popular streaming service after the tremendous success of Netflix’s Castlevania series. In their article, they state that the writer of the upcoming Hellboy remake Andrew Cosby was being tapped to help create the series. When asked about the rumors on twitter, Cosby’s only response was to say that if he were to work on a Diablo project he would keep the series Rated R.

Later in September, this rumor was confirmed by Cosby with a tweet stating: “I guess I can confirm I am indeed in final talks to write and show-run the new DIABLO animated series for Activision and Netflix. It’s very exciting and I hope to the High Heavens it all works out. -Andy Cosby (@andycosby)” This tweet was deleted shortly thereafter with no follow up from himself, Netflix, or Blizzard. This slip isn’t terribly surprising as usually showrunners will blast the announcement of their series early and often to get as much media attention as possible, something that is very different from Blizzard’s usual practice of not announcing anything until “it’s ready”.

Fast forward to this week and now we have two more tidbits dropping that we might finally get more news on the progress of the series itself:

First up, is the trademark registration filed on March 8th for a Diablo ‘Downloadable films and movies featuring narratives based on a video game and provided via a video-on-demand service”

From this piece of evidence we can guess that the talks between Cosby, Netflix, and Blizzard have been finalized and production of the show has started moving forward, otherwise why would Blizzard wait until now to file the trademark?

Secondly, Cosby recently tweeted about a secret project he’s working on and can’t wait to talk about.

Back in September Cosby was very excited to start talking about the Diablo project he was in talks for, so it’s not that far of a stretch to believe that this tweet is in regards to it. Hopefully Cosby’s comments aren’t a Blizzard “soon” and that we’ll hear more about the series before BlizzCon.
