Deck of the Week: Dragon Warlock

by - 9 years ago

Edit: After this was published, Mryagut tweeted that he made a small change with this deck. Basically he took out 1 Zombie Chow and put in Alexstraza and says it plays even better.

Mryagut played in the Road to BlizzCon World Championships last year and was known for playing very unconventional decks. Personally I loved seeing him play and he would always seem to bring something a bit different than what was the norm. People like him are what are needed on the scene in my opinion.

And he’s at it again, this week with a Dragon Warlock deck that helped him get to legendary. If you listen to our Well Met podcast you will have heard us talk about how dragons seem to fit mostly in Paladin, Priest, and some extent warrior, however Warlock was never even in the picture. Mryagut proves us wrong with a Dragon Warlock deck that plays similar to Handlock but has some nasty potential to do mega burst damage in the late game with Malygos.

This deck will definitely take a lot of practice to play well, but it’s definitely a fun deck to play.

Deck List

Dragon Warlock
Class: Warlock

Warlock (11)

Neutral (19)

Mulligan

I’ll be honest, I have only played this deck a handful of times so my mulligan might be a bit off. However, I tend to keep zombie chow, Darkbomb, and Twilight Drake. If I have the coin I will also keep Emperor Thaurissan. I think in the videos you will see me keep Ironbeak Owl but after playing those I don’t think that’s the best thing to do. If you have Blackwing Technican with a Twilight Drake that is probably your best opening hand.

Strategy

This deck plays a lot like Handlock so you’ll be drawing early and trying to keep early presence on the board. When turn 4 hits that’s when things definitely start looking good for you. The whole point is to do a bit of damage here and there, lay down Malygos and then let the good times roll. If you have Malygos with a Soulfire that’s 9 damage. If she survives and you have more spells it’s a lot more damage. Check out the video below and you’ll see how I am able to get 25 damage with 7 mana using Malygos. The deck is all about making good trades and getting good value out of your spell direct damage cards.

I currently play a Dragonlock with double Molten Giants instead of the Malygos Spell damage approach. How bad are you off if you don’t get Malygos?

This deck is 100% centered around Malygos. If you don’t play Malygos I would probably take out some of the damage spells.

I’ve been playing a traditional handlock style with volcanic drakes post board flush. Works SO well. Been able to double Giant, shadowflame one, volcanic drake, defender. Works better than double giant, defender for me….

Like the idea and the shell, but not so much on the Malygos bend. 🙂 To each their own.

This deck is pretty darn fun. It can be hit or miss at times, and don’t get too greedy with your mulligans. Getting a blackwing tech, twilight drake is hard to beat, but if you don’t get any early game play against any aggressive or even mid range deck you’re in trouble.
