Blizzard Officially Cancels Next Gen MMO Codenamed Titan

by - 10 years ago

It’s been 7 years since Blizzard has been working on their next gen MMO. It’s been a few years since we found out the codename was Titan and roughly a year since Blizzard hit the reset button on it.

Now, according to Mike Morhaime and Chris Metzen in a Polygon interview, Titan has been officially cancelled.

Speaking to Polygon, Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime reiterated that the company has technically never officially announced Titan, though it hasn’t been shy to talk about the game over the past seven years. “We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs,” Morhaime said. “So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn’t come together.

“We didn’t find the fun,” Morhaime continued. “We didn’t find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that’s the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no.”

The timing of this announcement is rather interesting with BlizzCon coming up. It might be to not have players get their hopes up for an MMO announcement at BlizzCon. This also leads me to believe that Blizzard is planning to announce a new game at BlizzCon and with this news it’s more than likely not going to be an MMO. So rather than their new announcement to be soiled by people wondering about Titan this is the reason why they’re making it’s cancellation known to the public now.

For those wondering about what the new game that is possible to get announced at BlizzCon, several months ago Blizzard trademarked the name Overwatch and not too long ago we announced that Michael Booth (a game director of an unannounced Blizzard game) was hiring for his new game. Nothing else is really known about Overwatch, but Michael Booth was the lead game designer for Left 4 Dead and has quite the FPS background.

With this announcement, what do you think Blizzard has in store for BlizzCon? Do you think we’re going to get a new game announcement or do you think this year might be a let down? Let us know in the comments.

Just to be clear – Blizzard filed a trademark application for Overwatch. It hasn’t been registered as a trademark just yet. There was another, earlier trademark application for the same name filed by a company called Innovis Labs, and Blizzard’s application was recently rejected based on the earlier filing.

It looks like Blizzard and Innovis may have come to an agreement that would allow Blizzard’s application to register, as Innovis amended its goods and services description to be sufficiently different from Blizzard’s.

We’ll have to wait and see.

What it’s going to be named doesn’t even really matter, the point is that I think Blizzard will be announcing something big at BlizzCon and this was a PR move to not have their announcement overshadowed by them cancelling Titan.

I’ve been listening to Ben Brode and Yong Woo and they keep saying Blizzcon is going to be SO amazing this year, I can only hope they are going to talk about new games or major content! Not just the E-Sports.

I’m happy “Titan” is dead let’s turn that effort towards Wow and move it into next gen.

If this means that the guys who made World of Warcraft great is going on that project again instead of Titan i believe we have some very interesting years in front of us.
